Blackbeard's Castle

WeddingsHosting a Wedding Above the Harbor

The property at Blackbeard’s Castle has hosted weddings for years, and the reason is the same every time: there is no background like it in the Virgin Islands. A 345-year-old stone tower, a harbor 300 feet below, the islands visible in every direction on a clear day. It is the kind of setting that makes photography easy.

What the property offers

Blackbeard’s Castle accommodates ceremonies and receptions in several configurations. The tower gardens are the most popular ceremony location — flat, shaded, with the tower rising behind the altar and the harbor visible through the garden. The pool terrace works for cocktail hours and smaller receptions. Jolly Roger’s handles catering and bar service for events of most sizes.

The light

West-facing, hilltop, 300 feet above the water. The ceremony light in the late afternoon is extraordinary. The harbor turns gold, the shadows get long, and the tower goes from gray stone to something warmer. Photographers who have worked the property know to plan the ceremony around 4:30 to 5 PM for the best window.

The logistics

The castle is accessible by car (there is parking on Government Hill) and on foot via the 99 Steps from Charlotte Amalie’s historic district. For guests arriving from the cruise terminal or Havensight, the 99 Steps walk takes about 15 minutes and is part of the experience. The property has a small hotel component for the wedding party.
