St. Thomas Cruise Port Guide: Docks, Town & Getting Around (2026)

The St. Thomas cruise port is really two ports. Most ships tie up at Havensight (the WICO dock) on the east side of Charlotte Amalie harbor, while others use Crown Bay to the west. Both put you a short ride from downtown Charlotte Amalie, the historic heart of the island, where landmarks like the 99 Steps and Blackbeard’s Castle sit just above the shops. This guide covers both docks, how to get into town, what’s worth your time, and how to be back on board with room to spare.

The Two Docks at the St. Thomas Cruise Port

Havensight / WICO Dock

Havensight is the busier of the two piers and the one most Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Carnival ships use. You step off directly into Havensight Mall, a cluster of duty-free shops, and downtown Charlotte Amalie is about 1.5 miles west along the waterfront. It is a flat, scenic 25 to 30 minute walk, or a few minutes by taxi.

Crown Bay

Crown Bay sits on the west side of the harbor and handles many of the newest, largest ships. There is a small shopping center at the pier, and downtown is roughly 1.5 miles east. Plan on a short taxi ride rather than walking, since the route into town is less pedestrian friendly than the Havensight side.

Not sure which dock your ship uses? The Virgin Islands Port Authority publishes official berthing schedules, and your cruise line’s daily planner will confirm it the night before.

Getting from the Dock into Charlotte Amalie

Shared open-air safari taxis line up at both piers and run a flat per-person rate into town. Rides take 5 to 10 minutes depending on traffic. Tell the driver where you are headed; for the historic district and Blackbeard’s Castle, ask for Government Hill or the 99 Steps. Remember that traffic drives on the left here, a holdover from the Danish era that surprises most first-time visitors.

If you would rather walk from Havensight, follow the waterfront west with the harbor on your left. You will pass Yacht Haven Grande’s marina and arrive at the edge of downtown. For the full turn-by-turn route up the hill, see our guide on getting from the cruise port to Blackbeard’s Castle.

What to Do Near the St. Thomas Cruise Port

Charlotte Amalie rewards visitors who wander a few blocks past the jewelry stores. The town’s Danish colonial architecture, brick warehouses, and hillside stairways are unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean.

Climb the 99 Steps to Blackbeard’s Castle

The famous 99 Steps, built from ship-ballast brick in the 1700s, climb from Government Hill toward Skytsborg Tower, the 1679 Danish watchtower known today as Blackbeard’s Castle. It is one of only five National Historic Landmarks in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the view over the harbor from the top is the best in town. Admission is a simple $15 day pass that includes the castle grounds, a tour of the tower, pool access, a drink at Jolly Roger’s, and a rum room sampling. USVI residents get in free with island ID. Grab passes ahead of time at tickets.blackbeardscastle.com, and see the walking tour page for what the climb covers.

Eat and Drink at Jolly Roger’s

Jolly Roger’s Restaurant & Pirate Bar sits poolside at the top of the hill and is always free to walk into. No admission needed to eat or drink. Island-inspired food, rum cocktails, a swim-up bar, and a straight-shot view over the harbor where your ship is waiting. It is open 9am to 9pm daily, which fits any port call.

Explore the Historic District

Fort Christian, the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands, anchors the waterfront a short walk from the taxi drop. Emancipation Garden, the vendor market, and Main Street’s old Danish warehouses fill out an easy walking loop before or after your climb up Government Hill.

Timing Your Day in Port

Most calls at the St. Thomas cruise port run from early morning to late afternoon or evening. A comfortable plan looks like this:

  • Morning: taxi to Government Hill while it is cool, climb the 99 Steps, tour Skytsborg Tower.
  • Midday: swim and lunch at Jolly Roger’s, then the rum room sampling included with your day pass.
  • Afternoon: shop your way back through Main Street and the waterfront, then taxi to the pier with time to spare.

Ships with evening departures get a bonus: sunset over Charlotte Amalie harbor around 6pm, best watched from the pool deck at Jolly Roger’s. If you are tempted to stay longer than a port call allows, the boutique hotel on the castle grounds takes reservations year-round, and guests get grounds, pool, and tower access included.

St. Thomas Cruise Port FAQ

Which dock will my cruise ship use in St. Thomas?

Most ships berth at Havensight (WICO); many of the largest, newest ships use Crown Bay. Your cruise line confirms the pier in its daily planner, and the Virgin Islands Port Authority posts official schedules.

Can I walk to town from the St. Thomas cruise port?

From Havensight, yes. It is a flat 25 to 30 minute waterfront walk into Charlotte Amalie. From Crown Bay, take a shared taxi; the walking route is longer and less pleasant.

Is Blackbeard’s Castle worth visiting on a cruise day?

Yes. The $15 day pass covers the grounds, the Skytsborg Tower tour, the pool, a drink at Jolly Roger’s, and a rum sampling, all about 10 minutes from either pier. It is the signature historic site in Charlotte Amalie and an easy half-day.

Do I need tickets in advance?

Walk-ups are welcome 9am to 9pm daily, but buying your day pass online at tickets.blackbeardscastle.com saves time on busy multi-ship days.
